Topic
The Disabled Girls' Guide to Higher Education
Description
Did you know that people with disabilities are significantly less likely to hold a college degree than people without disabilities? We can change that!
Join Disability EmpowHer Network and the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation for a panel discussion about how four women with paralysis pushed through higher education. Panelists Curran Brown, Tyree Brown, Johileny Meran, and Nila Morton will talk about their journeys through college, including selecting their schools and majors; tips for balancing school and social lives; how to handle stress; and so much more!
By hearing from women who have gone through this journey, audience members will gain an understanding that they are not alone and be empowered to begin their own journeys to higher education!
This event is FREE for everyone to attend. Live captioning will be available.
This webinar will be recorded and sent out via email to all registrants, as well as available on the Reeve Foundation YouTube channel.

Born and raised in Georgia, USA but now living in London, England, I just completed my studies to become an occupational therapist this year! I grew up playing wheelchair basketball which led me to become a student athlete at the University of Illinois. After graduation, I found her love for occupational therapy while working as a peer mentor at the Shepherd Center. I believe it is imperative to have disabled representation in the able-bodied dominant healthcare field. I am currently the EmpowHer Camp Director for Disability EmpowHer Network. In my spare time I love traveling, going to concerts, art, and thrift shopping. Johileny Meran (Program Coordinator @Mobility International USA) Johileny has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Global Public Health with a minor in Disability Studies from New York University (NYU). During her undergrad, Johileny was a disability rights advocate for campus accessibility. She studied away in Washington, DC where she interned twice to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities in emergency response and preparedness. She studied abroad at NYU London, England as a Global Equity Fellow, where she was tasked with improving resources for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Based on this experience, Johileny created a “London Access Culture Guide '' to inform students with disabilities about access in London. This experience led her to work with Mobility International USA, to increase the participation of people with disabilities in international exchange. A Dominican immigrant and native Spanish speaker, Johileny enjoys adaptive sports, mentoring, and giving back to her community. Tyree Brown (Student pursuing (Media production certificate) @Prince Georges Community College) My name Tyree Brown and I’m a 28-year-old Christian visual artist. In 2015 I was in a car accident that rendered me quadriplegic. Art has always been a prominent part of my life but everything changed after my injury, I could no longer walk or use my dominant right hand. While in rehabilitation, I learned to adapt in using my left hand to train it how to draw even with it’s limited mobility. I received my associates in Fine Art at the Corcoran School of the George Washington University, and to continue my learnings, I am currently working on a media production certificate at the Prince Georges Community College. I continue to do commission work and volunteer as a Disability Advocate to share my story of how art and community has helped me gain confidence as a person with a disability. I believe that no matter what your disability or ability is, if you keep faith and continue to hope, you can make your goals a reality. Nila Morton (Blogger @Consultant) My name is Nila Morton. I am 24 years old and have been a wheelchair user for most of my life. I graduated with my bachelor’s degree in Psychology and planning to go to graduate school to get my master's in Social Work and maybe later in life get my Ph.D. I’m a disabled advocate. I use my social media platform to bring awareness about disability issues in hopes to make a change. One of my life goals is to become a therapist so I can continue to help people, especially Black and disabled people, feel understood and heard. I have been working with Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation since August 2022 as a blogger and doing collaborations. During my free time, I enjoy reading, writing, going shopping, hanging with my family and friends, and playing with my dog, Chloe.
