Many are familiar with “safe spaces,” but an alternative might be “brave spaces,” environments that encourage students to pose challenging questions while also allowing them to feel comfortable in addressing such questions with their own, respectful, and uninhibited views.

Join panOpen and Paradigm Education Solutions for our February 24th webinar, "Teaching Sociology in a Time of Uncertainty," led by Dr. Rashawn Ray, Professor of Sociology and co-author of panOpen’s "A Sociology Experiment" courseware. In this webinar, Dr. Ray will be responding to these timely questions. The webinar will be moderated by Dr. Heather Parker, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Professor of History at Saint Leo University. Dr. Parker is also a member of the panOpen’s Board of Directors.

The format of this webinar will be Q&A, so please come with your engaging questions. Attendance for this webinar is limited to the first 500 registrants. A recording of the webinar will be made publicly available on panOpen's Youtube channel on 2/25, and the link will be emailed to all webinar registrants.

Rubenstein Fellow in Governance Studies at The Brookings Institution, is Professor of Sociology and Executive Director of the Lab for Applied Social Science Research at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is also one of the co-editors of Contexts Magazine: Sociology for the Public. Formerly, Ray was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Research Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley. Ray’s research addresses the mechanisms that manufacture and maintain racial and social inequality with a particular focus on police-civilian relations and men’s treatment of women. His work also speaks to ways that inequality may be attenuated through racial uplift activism and social policy. Dr. Ray has published over 50 books, articles, and book chapters, and nearly 20 op-eds. Dr. Ray’s research has been cited by the Washington Post, Associated Press, Reuters, CNN, ESPN, Vox, The Root, and The Chronicle. Dr. Heather R. Parker (Dean, College of Arts and Sciences and Professor of History @Saint Leo University) Dr. Parker, a member of the panOpen’s Board of Directors, is Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Professor of History at Saint Leo University. She earned her Ph.D. in history from UCLA where she began her academic career examining interethnic political interaction in mid-20th-century Los Angeles. While she has devoted much of her recent career to administration, she continues to engage in research and is now focused on interethnic religious interaction and the political implications of these relationships in Florida. She has also been researching the ways in which college administrations and faculty can provide effective mentoring for both traditional and non-traditional minority students. The result of this research is the launch of the Saint Leo Minority Mentoring Project in 2018.
