Data diversity - The missing link for gender equality in AI?
Data literacy is often touted as the quintessential skill of the 21st century. And, increasingly, governments recognize how empowering people to work with data is connected with democratizing access to it. Without widespread availability of granular, meaningful, yet privacy-safe data, only a privileged few can reap its benefits. Yet, there's an essential piece missing in the current debate: data diversity - and how to achieve it.
Our perception of reality is shaped by what we see, rendering anything not included at risk of being overlooked. In a world, where AI systems should be responsible, human-centric, and equitable, it's not only diversity among data professionals that matters to move closer towards gender equality. Diversity in data is equally important. Only then creative minds (and AI algorithms alike) will be enabled to analyze, understand and innovate not only for the average John Doe, but the full spectrum of human diversity. Join Alexandra for a fun talk on data diversity, what we can learn from Netflix and how synthetic data is helping us to get one step closer towards gender equality in AI (and beyond).
