Overview of pathways, barriers and challenges for young people in Australian industry
In this informative webinar NCI Executive Director Ms Tiffany Blight will provide insight on the pathways, barriers and challenges for our young people in Australian industry.

The youth unemployment rate has remained elevated since the Global Financial Crisis. During the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic our young people were most impacted. Youth unemployment rate reached 16.4% across June and July 2020 and the labour market has recovered, but the process has been uneven, and our unemployment rate doesn’t tell the full story.

As our youth are yet to return to pre-pandemic levels of employment, it’s important to look at what is happening in the jobs market. Tiffany will take a look at these indicators as our youth tend to feel the effects of downturns more acutely - and for longer.

One in five of our young people have been more impacted because of the industries they work in like retail, accommodation, food services and construction.

The challenge for our young people is not around having a career in mind, or not knowing what the next steps are.
Tiffany will take a look at some of the challenges for our school leavers.
• Are girls more likely than boys to know what they want to do after school?
• How many young people feel ‘fairly certain’ about their future - or are un-decided?
• Finishing school is an important first step, but how do you be competitive in the job market?
• Do employers place more emphasis on personal qualities or technical skills?

This webinar will help you find out about what Enhanced Support for Early School Leavers is and how young people can access a specialised School Leavers Information Kit - and a free School Leavers Information Service.

You can also find out what the 25 emerging occupations in the Australian labour market are, that www.yourcareer.gov.au can provide you to help explore your options - and a pathway to your future career.
