Through Song & Word: Importance of Tribal Language Preservation
Prior to the 11th century, which marked the beginning of European colonization, it is estimated that over 1,000 unique languages were spoken throughout the Americas. Today these numbers have dwindled down to hundreds with many of the languages left with less than a few hundred speakers. We will be joined by Choctaw language expert Jason Lewis who will share his personal journey to revitalize the language of his ancestors and tribal leader Deborah Sanchez who has been leading efforts to ensure that future generations will have a chance to sing and speak in the Šmuwič (Chumash) language.
