Illegal loggers stepping up as champions of sustainable forestry
Indonesia is host to some of the largest rainforests in the world, and also tops the list for rapid deforestation, with dire repercussions on economic, human, and planetary health. Yet, the country is also emerging as a bright spot in the fight against illegal logging. According to the World Resource Institute, the rate of primary forest loss decreased for the fourth year in a row in 2020. What is behind this transformation?

Ashoka & Skoll Fellow Silverius Unggul, co-founder of Telapak, holds some of the answers. On October 20 he will share how community-based, data-driven logging is literally transforming Indonesia’s landscape, making sustainable forestry a viable alternative for (formerly) illegal loggers across 27 Indonesian provinces.

The conversation will be about 30 minutes. Bring your questions!
