Her undergraduate studies were in Sociology & Economics at Smith College in Massachusetts and she obtained her MD and Master of Public Health at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. After training in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics at Mayo Clinic, she remained there for 20 years. She focused on developing system-wide processes to improve safety and reduce adverse events in hospitalized elders, delivering dozens of lectures on these topics in the US and Brazil. After retiring, she has devoted her efforts to expanding our public health insurance program, MNCare, to all in need, working with the Land Stewardship Project on behalf of rural communities. She ran unsuccessfully for the Minnesota Senate in 2020 with a goal of helping transform Minnesota’s broken healthcare system.
