Burnout has been described as a state of declining performance in individuals who have been exhausted by their professional life. It is highly prevalent in surgical specialties, resulting in reduced job and patient satisfaction, higher rates of medical errors, major mental illness and occasionally suicide. The high stress levels often associated with surgical training appear to directly impact this. Given the workforce retainment issues and decreasing morale seen within surgical spheres at present, targeted pre-emptive interventions based upon relevant risk factors for burnout should be prioritised, at both individual and institutional levels.

Imposter syndrome is a feeling of inadequacy or incompetence. This is common among physicians, associated with diminished joy in practice and is notably associated with modifiable factors which may lead to increased comfort and joy at work.

Both these highly relevant topics will be discussed in this webinar from the panel which consists of a medical coach and retired surgeon, a Consultant Psychiatrist in Medical Psychotherapy, a trainee and moderated by a consultant Urogynecologist.
