Advances in Osteoporosis Screening: Finding More Patients at Risk
New technologies are dramatically changing our ability to screen for osteoporosis and detect changes in bone health at an earlier stage -- enabling the earlier delivery of treatments.

For example, opportunistic screening enables medical images acquired for other uses -- like CT and digital x-ray -- to be analyzed to detect signs of osteopenia and osteoporosis. This promises to make bone health assessment more convenient and cost-effective for both clinicians and patients.

Perry Pickhardt, MD
Chief of Gastrointestinal Imaging and Medical Director of Cancer Imaging @University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health
Dr. Perry Pickhardt serves as the chief of gastrointestinal imaging and medical director of cancer imaging at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He joined the abdominal imaging section at the university 2003 and was promoted to full professor in 2009. Dr. Pickhardt graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School, and he completed his residency in diagnostic radiology at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University. After residency training, Dr. Pickhardt served in the U.S. Navy, spending one year as the department head of radiology at the U.S. Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and three years as the head of gastrointestinal/gastrourinary imaging at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. His work in abdominal imaging has resulted in over 500 scientific publications and book chapters, as well as multiple textbooks. He was the winner of the Minnies award for Most Influential Radiology Researcher in 2016.
Ronnie Sebro, MD, PhD

Dr. Ronnie Sebro earned a doctorate in biostatistics at Harvard University and his medical degree at Stanford University. He completed his residency in diagnostic radiology at the University of California, San Francisco. His career interests include musculoskeletal imaging and intervention, bone and soft-tissue tumors, rheumatological disorders, and statistical genetics, as well as genomics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. Dr. Sebro has published research on machine learning for the prediction of osteopenia/osteoporosis based on CT scans; causal associations between diseases and imaging findings based on their simultaneous occurrence in radiology reports; and racial and ethnic diversity among students, graduates, and faculty in biostatistics and epidemiology.
Leon Lenchik, MD
Professor of Radiology and Division Chief of Musculoskeletal Imaging @Wake Forest University School of Medicine
Dr. Leon Lenchik is professor of radiology and division chief of musculoskeletal imaging at Wake Forest University School of Medicine (WFUSOM) and has over 20 years of research experience in quantitative imaging, focusing on sarcopenia, adiposity, and osteoporosis, spanning a range of technologies, including CT, MRI, and DXA. He is currently co-leader of the Bioimaging Resource Core of Wake Forest Older Americans Independence Center (WF OAIC), where he directs all imaging quality assurance procedures and supervises all CT-based muscle and adipose tissue segmentations. He has conducted CT-derived body composition measurements in many large studies, including the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST), Diabetes Heart Study (DHS), Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) Study, and Health, Aging and Body Composition Study (HABC). His current research focuses on validation, automation, and implementation of novel CT measurements (including radiomics) in the evaluation of body composition.
Aaron Brown, MS, MBA

Aaron Brown has been managing market research projects at IMV since 2018. He has led over 100 studies, including many that focused on medical imaging and other advanced healthcare technologies. Prior to working at IMV, Aaron was a researcher in the Texas Children’s Hospital Microbiome Center. Aaron obtained his MBA from Rice University Jones Graduate School of Business and obtained his M.S. in Microbiology from Clemson University.
