Procalcitonin (PCT) has been well established in clinical practice for the use among patients with lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) and bacterial infections, but there is a broader application with patients on antibiotics. Joseph Kuti, PharmD will share how the use of PCT has evolved within the Hartford HealthCare system to include the biomarker in the antibiotic management of COVID-19 patients. He will also discuss the operational pull through of the biomarker across multidisciplinary teams that include the pharmacy.

Joseph L. Kuti, PharmD, FIDP

Dr. Kuti is Associate Director of Clinical and Economic Studies at the Center for Anti-Infective Research and Development at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut. He received his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from Rutgers University, College of Pharmacy in Piscataway, New Jersey. He then completed a post-doctorate fellowship in Antibiotic Management and Pharmacoeconomics at Hartford Hospital. Dr. Kuti is a member of the American Society for Microbiology, Infectious Disease Society of America, and past-President and honorary Fellow of the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists. He is also an advisor to the CLSI Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing Subcommittee. Dr. Kuti’s primary area of research includes the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and outcomes of antimicrobial management of severe infections. His research has been published in over 200 peer-reviewed papers.
