Professor Brian Schmidt
Vice Chancellor & President @The Australian National University
Winner of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics, Professor Schmidt was an astrophysicist at the ANU Mount Stromlo Observatory and Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics before becoming Vice-Chancellor. Professor Schmidt received undergraduate degrees in Astronomy and Physics from the University of Arizona in 1989, and completed his Astronomy Master's degree (1992) and PhD (1993) from Harvard University. Under his leadership, in 1998, the High-Z Supernova Search team made the startling discovery that the expansion rate of the Universe is accelerating. Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, The United States Academy of Science, and the Royal Society, he was made a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2013.
Professor Deborah Terry AO
Vice Chancellor & President @The University of Queensland
Professor Terry was made an Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia (AO) in June 2015, in recognition of her distinguished service to education in the tertiary sector. She is Chair of the Board of Universities Australia; a Fellow and past President of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia; an appointed member of the Australian Research Council Advisory Council; and serves on the Australia and New Zealand School of Government Board and Australia's Academic and Research Network Board. Having grown up in Perth and Canberra, Professor Terry completed her PhD in Social Psychology at the Australian National University in Canberra. From there, she commenced her distinguished career at UQ in 1990, initially as an internationally recognised scholar in psychology.
Professor Giselle Byrnes
Provost @Massey University
Prof Byrnes is responsible for providing strategic leadership to advance research and enterprise activities, support learning and teaching and maintaining academic quality assurance across the University. In her role as Provost, Giselle is also responsible for advancing a high-quality research culture, supporting Massey’s national and international research collaborations, driving excellence in teaching and academic development and maintaining the University’s leadership in distance, online and blended education. An experienced leader in the higher education sector, Giselle has senior management experience in universities in both Australia and New Zealand. She has a strong commitment to advancing initiatives that enhance equity and access in higher education and is an advocate for the critical role played by universities in creating social and cultural capital which drives public benefits and economic wellbeing.
