The Wadiyar dynasty started in 1399 and ruled almost uninterruptedly through 1947 until the abolition of monarchy in 1950 is among the longest surviving royalty in the world. In these 600+ years, they have served as vassals of the Vijayanagar Empire, rulers under Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan, and finally as allies of the British Empire. Their 'modern history' starts with the purchase of Bangalore for INR 3 lakhs from the Mughals. The Wadiyars pioneered the urbanization of India starting with Mysore by encouraging fine arts, architecture, and music. They established Mysore Silk, Sandalwood soap, timber mills, etc. In 1893 a chance meeting between Swami Vivekananda and Sir Jamsetji Tata led to the concept of creating an institution for research and advancing scientific capabilities. Then Maharaja Krishna Raja Wadiyar IV donated 371 acres of land, now valued in excess of INR 200 Billion, which is home to the Indian Institute of Science. In addition, the royal family donated INR 50 Lakhs (equivalent to INR 12.5 million) for annual expenses. In 1916, the Mysore Maharaja also helped to establish the University of Mysore.
