Vasseur’s research conducted during the past 6 years through her Industrial Research Chair focused on understanding the factors in the cow’s environment, more specifically management and housing, that impact animal welfare. As a starting point to the research program, there were no preconceptions regarding the appropriateness of existing management systems (i.e., tie-stall vs. free-stall systems); rather, the research consisted of an analysis of the prevailing systems and the development of a framework for sustainable dairy management. The main driver output suggests housing impacts the cow welfare status and the need for movement in cows: A) What housing conditions affect the cow welfare status? B) What movement opportunities can be offered to the cow at the stall and outside the stall, and how do we implement this practice? C) Can the provision of outdoor access restore the cow’s condition?
