How Data Can Help You Make Your Program Profitable

Some people are intimidated by the idea that “the numbers don’t lie” when it comes to their department’s finances. But what if understanding those numbers allowed you to meaningfully improve your program?

Ron Jones and his team, with support of administration, took a district in South Carolina that had been running in the red for nearly a decade, and turned it around to profitability in its first year by looking at the numbers including: MPLH, labor costs, food costs–all common KPIs.

Analyzing the program, he found 13 areas where he could make changes that would bring them into profitability and allowed them to:

- provide their students higher-quality nutrition with organic produce and local beef;
- offer better wages to their employees and decrease turnover;
- increase participation in their program.
