Center of Excellence in Surgical Safety: Prevention of RSI: Guideline Update & Program Overview
AORN is proud to introduce a complimentary education and recognition program for perioperative teams to prevent near misses and consequences of unintentionally retained surgical items (RSI).

- Dr. Lisa Spruce is the Director of Evidence Based Perioperative Practice for the Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses. She is responsible for the overall leadership, development, evaluation and maintenance of the products, services, and guidelines for perioperative practice developed by AORNs Nursing Practice Team and AORNs Research and Information Center. Prior to coming to AORN she was the Clinical Manager of Surgical Services for Universal Health Services where she managed all clinical practice for 25 perioperative departments throughout the U. S. Dr. Spruce is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.
- Dr. Julie Cahn has 18 years of experience in perioperative nursing working as a clinical nurse in both the scrub and circulating roles, a perioperative educator, and a perioperative Clinical Nurse Specialist. She has worked in eight operating rooms across the United States from Boston to Honolulu, giving her a well-rounded perspective of clinical practice. Much of her work has revolved around professional development of perioperative nurses and ensuring excellence in patient outcomes. Dr. Cahn works as a Senior Perioperative Practice Specialist for AORN and was the lead author on the recent revision of the Guideline for Prevention of Unintentionally Retained Surgical Items.
