What permanent effects can we expect once COVID is in the rearview mirror? Will cities decline, simply “return to normal,” or chart a path to something else entirely? Join The Progress Network for a conversation with Penny Abeywardena, NYC’s Commissioner of International Affairs, and Richard Florida, one of the world’s leading urbanists, as they assess the future of big cities in the short- and long-term.

We’ll discuss whether remote work is here to stay, how cities can address the economic harms of COVID, whether the pandemic is truly a tectonic shift away from dense urban areas or not, where it might make sense to move or invest, and more.

As the City’s ambassador, Penny leads the agency serving the largest diplomatic corps in the world and is the primary representative to the United Nations, 193 permanent missions, 116 consulates, and 75 trade missions. Since her appointment in September 2014, New York City has successfully implemented a series of initiatives and programs with the international community, which include youth empowerment and the leadership of cities and local governments on global issues like climate change and managing/rebuilding post the COVID-19 pandemic. During spring 2020, when NYC was the epicenter of the pandemic in the US, she was responsible for working with the United Nations and foreign governments to secure necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) and ventilators. Prior to the Mayor of New York City’s appointment, Penny was the Director of Girls and Women Integration at the Clinton Global Initiative. Richard Florida (Founder @Creative Class Group) Richard Florida is one of the world’s leading urbanists. He is a researcher and professor, serving as University Professor at University of Toronto’s School of Cities and Rotman School of Management, and a Faculty Chair at NYU’s Schack School of Real Estate. He is a writer and journalist, having penned several global best sellers, including the award winning The Rise of the Creative Class and his most recent book, The New Urban Crisis. He is co-founder of CityLab, the leading publication devoted to cities and urbanism. He is an entrepreneur, as founder of the Creative Class Group which works closely with companies and governments worldwide. Zachary Karabell (Founder @The Progress Network) Zachary Karabell is the founder of the Progress Network. He is an author, columnist, and investor and president of River Twice Capital. Previously, he was Head of Global Strategies at Envestnet, a publicly traded financial services firm. Prior to that, he was President of Fred Alger & Company. In addition, he ran the River Twice Fund from 2011–2013, an alternative fund that focused on sustainability. Educated at Columbia, Oxford and Harvard, where he received his PhD, Karabell has written widely on history, economics, and international relations. His next book, Inside Money: Brown Brothers Harriman and the American Way of Power, will be published by Penguin Press in May 2021. His last book was The Leading Indicators: A Short History of the Numbers That Rule Our World, and he is the author of eleven previous books. He also sits on the board of New America and PEN America.
