Constructing the Democratic Public Bank for Los Angeles
California in October 2019 passed a historic law to charter 10 local public banks. Public banks have the potential to address a host of economic, social, and ecological crises, and community leaders across the country are looking to California to lead the way. But structure matters. Poorly designed public banks that do not embed the right democratic and social justice principles will amount to a setback we cannot afford.

This webinar explores the challenge of getting the public bank’s mandates, missions, and programs properly aligned with maximum public engagement and accountability, in conjunction with the new Democracy Collaborative report, “Constructing the Democratic Public Bank: A Governance Proposal for the Los Angeles Public Bank.” Speakers will explore the key details and questions that need to be addressed in order to ensure that these public banks empower communities and help solve the crises they face.

Speakers:
• Michael Brennan, research fellow at The Democracy Collaborative and author of the new report “Constructing the Democratic Public Bank: A Governance Proposal for the Los Angeles Public Bank”
• Trinity Tran, co-founder and organizer with Public Bank Los Angeles and the California Public Banking Alliance
• Naveen Agrawal, Public Bank Los Angeles organizer and author of the 2020 report “Public Bank Los Angeles: Public Finance for Social Good”
• Thomas Marois, senior fellow at University College London’s Institute for innovation and Public Purpose and author of the new book "Public Banks: Decarbonisation, Definancialisation, and Democratisation"
• Rohan Grey, assistant professor at Willamette University College of Law and founder and president of the Modern Money Network

Moderated by Thomas Hanna, research director at The Democracy Collaborative and author of the 2019 report, “Constructing the Democratic Public Enterprise”
