IMP Seminar Series: Walter Sinnott-Armstrong, Monday December 6th

ABSTRACT: Debates about free will and moral responsibility have raged among philosophers as well as the general public for centuries. The persistent popularity of competing positions suggests that the two sides of these debates use different concepts and misunderstand each other. We will support this suggestion with recent surveys in which participants distinguish freedom from constraint versus freedom from determination, inevitability, and causation. Our results show that our survey participants think about different concepts of freedom in different scenarios or contexts.
