We’re in a perfect storm! In many communities, the COVID-19 Delta Variant has stressed healthcare systems, including emergency medical services. Staffing in EMS agencies and hospitals are at critical levels, hospitals are nearly full, and 911 call volume in some communities is at record levels. Numerous EMS agencies across the country are reporting 60, 90, and 120+ minute delays transitioning care into hospital emergency departments. However, some hospitals are able to release EMS crews efficiently, so that ambulances are available to respond to other 911 calls in the community.
A panel of experts from AIMHI member agencies, an EMS legal expert, and representatives from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and a regional trauma center that has seemed to master the EMS turnaround efficiency will provide their perspectives on the operational and potential legal consequences of ambulance parking. They will also share their best practices for helping to mitigate hospital emergency department delays. AIMHI will also present the results of their FLASH POLL on ED turnaround delays, as well as an analysis of EMS/ED turnaround times provided by ESO and NEMSIS from nearly 37 million patient care records between 2019 and 2021.
