"What's your book about?" is a question that fills many writers with terror. Learn how to answer this question with confidence in this craft seminar. Writers at all stages of the publishing process—whether you're drafting your manuscript, querying agents, or about to have your debut published—can benefit tremendously from thinking about their book from a reader's point of view. Conceptualizing a book gets at the paradox at the heart of book publishing: your book must be totally original and similar to something that's already popular. Leigh Stein, the author of five books and a coach who's helped other writers sell projects to major publishers, will share her experience from both a craft and industry perspective. By the end of the seminar, writers will be able to describe their own book in a succinct and compelling way.

Her critically acclaimed satirical novel Self Care was released in June 2020. Leigh is also the author of the memoir Land of Enchantment, the poetry collection Dispatch from the Future, and the novel The Fallback Plan. Her non-fiction writing has appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the New Yorker online, Allure, ELLE, Poets & Writers, BuzzFeed, The Cut, Salon, and Slate. Leigh was cofounder and executive director of Out of the Binders/BinderCon, a feminist literary nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the careers of women and gender variant writers. Nearly 2,000 writers attended BinderCon events in NYC and LA. Leigh also moderated the private Facebook community of 40,000 writers. Her fifth book, What to Miss When, a collection of poetry written during the Coronavirus pandemic, is forthcoming from Soft Skull Press in 2021.
