Inequities in Access to Healthcare: Can Legislative Initiatives Make a Difference in Montgomery County?

There are the nearly 118,000 adults who are underinsured in Montgomery County. These residents pay out-of-pocket for all health care services or face prohibitive outlays for co-pays and deductibles. Uninsured residents of Montgomery County include low-wage workers, part-time County employees, and small business workers. These residents are disproportionately people of color as well as immigrants and refugees who are ineligible for many government programs aimed at closing the coverage gap. The Montgomery County Council has urged immediate state-level action to fix the problem, but will that work?
