The 25 November 2020 is the 80th anniversary of a tragic happening in Haifa harbour when a ship named “The Patria” capsized and sank in Haifa harbour with the loss of 200 Jewish refugees and 50 British soldiers and crew members.
The infamous British White Paper of 1939 seriously restricted Jewish immigration to their ancient homeland, Mandatory Palestine. A policy which was an utter betrayal of Britain’s responsibility to create a homeland for the Jewish people according to the terms of the British Mandate for Palestine enshrined in international law at San Remo in 1920 and subsequently endorsed unanimously by the League of Nations. The British authorities planned to discourage the flow of Jewish refugees who were desperately trying to escape Nazi Europe, by sending those who arrived in Haifa harbour on three ships in November 1940, to detention in Mauritius. The Jewish underground attempted to disable “The Patria” to prevent it sailing to Mauritius, but the bomb they placed on the ship blew a large hole in the side and she sank very quickly.
