Che Pope, legendary record producer and Head of Upstream at DistroKid, knows all how important streaming and sales data is when it comes to growing your career as an indie artist and getting signed. That’s why just earlier this year, Che joined DistroKid to launch Upstream - a platform that feeds crucial data to A&R’s to help indie artists land a record deal. Not only has Che won two Grammy’s for his artistic talent, he served as COO of GOOD Music Records for 7 years, spearheading creative output, A&R, and marketing. Before that as Senior VP of A&R and at Aftermath Records, Staff Composer for Hans Zimmer’s Remote Control, and Senior VP of A&R for Warner Bros Record he has crafted many hits that have topped charts. In his new role at DistroKid, his goal is to leverage data to propel the next generation of artists into stardom.

This panel will dive deep into what DistroKid does, how A&R departments utilize data to scope out the new big thing, and how artists should be strategizing their distribution, streaming, and online engagement to build an undeniable story that garners attention from the industry gatekeepers. Moderator Alyssa Castiglia leads A&R and Creative at Primary Wave and formerly leveraged data to discover artists as an A&R at Island Records.

Che’s contributions to some of the most impactful, culturally relevant projects of the past two decades garnered him two Grammy awards, and the respect and recognition as a force majeure within his field. As a music producer, he has collaborated with legendary and visionary artists including Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Carlos Santana, Destiny’s Child, Lauryn Hill, Dr. Dre and Kanye West. Having honed his skill as a master collaborator, Che segued into leadership roles within the executive side of the business. Most recently, Che served as COO of GOOD Music Records for 7 years, spearheading creative output, A&R, and marketing. Before that as Senior VP of A&R and Lead Staff Producer at Aftermath Records, Staff Composer for Hans Zimmer’s Remote Control, and Senior VP of A&R for Warner Bros Records. Alyssa Castiglia (Senior Director, Creative @Primary Wave) Directly out of college, Alyssa was hired at Mercury Records to start and develop the A&R Research department, which she ran singlehandedly for four years before building out the team. Mercury later evolved into Island Records, where she held the title of Associate Director of A&R. One of Alyssa’s first repertoire signings was 21 year old singer-songwriter Olivia O’Brien. In September 2018, Alyssa spearheaded Island's deal with label Avant Garden, A&Ring their culturally & critically lauded artists: Emotional Oranges, THEY., Chiiild, Slenderbodies, and Rynx. Alyssa’s current endeavors include serving as the Senior Director of A&R at Primary Wave Music, consulting for the A&R department at Arista Records (Sony), and managing several producers and artists. At Primary Wave, Alyssa works across the contemporary roster, developing such talents as PVRIS, M-Phazes, Tim Randolph, 12AM, and two of the acts she signed at Island - Chiiild & Dante Jones from THEY.
