Brookfield Reads, the Library’s annual community-wide reading and book discussion initiative, returns this spring with The Calculating Stars by award-winning author Mary Robinette Kowal. We will be discussing The Calculating Stars with Kowal over Zoom.
The Calculating Stars follows Elma York, a mathematician and WASP pilot in the 1950s who yearns to be among the stars. When a cataclysmic event happens on Earth that leads to scientists looking to the stars for a new home, Elma sees an opportunity to be one of the first “Lady Astronauts” to land on the Moon. The Calculating Stars is the winner of 2018 Nebula award, the 2019 Locus and Hugo awards, and was named one of the top novels of 2018 by the Chicago Review of Books, Publishers Weekly, Book Riot, and other publications.
