Description
The remarkable growth in the aging population means all sectors of social services need to be prepared to work with older adults. This webinar features three professionals whose work frequently intersects with older adult clients and family members. Dr. Rupal Parekh, Assistant Professor, and Dr. Kathryn Betts Adams, Gerontology Consultant to the UConn School of Social Work Scholars in Aging will facilitate an engaging discussion on the presenters’ unique experiences working with older adults.

She earned bachelor’s degrees in Secondary Education and English from Lesley University and a master’s degree in social work from Southern Connecticut State University. She began her career as a teacher, which exposed her to challenging social issues and injustices and sparked her interest in social work. She has spent the past decade advocating for elders and aiding them in living healthy and fulfilled lives. Rachel has worked with geriatric populations in a variety of settings including nursing homes, home care, hospitals, and the outpatient setting where she currently supports the Geriatric Clinic at UConn Health. She assists elders and their families navigate the aging process while prioritizing their dignity, self-determination, and safety. Tina L. Jefferson, LMSW (Bureau Chief of Child Welfare, State of Connecticut, Department of Children and Families ) Tina Jefferson, LMSW is the Bureau Chief of Child Welfare at CT DCF. She holds a BS in Human Development and Family Relations and a Master of Social Work from UCONN. Ms. Jefferson has been with DCF for over 27 years, moving up the ranks. She is responsible for the Child Welfare Bureau operations, which include the 14 Regional Offices, Careline, and the Foster Care Division. Before joining DCF, she was a Family Advocate for CRT Head Start and a Social Worker for the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services. Ms. Jefferson considers herself a change agent having served as co-chair for several committees including DCF Change Management, the Greater Hartford Domestic Violence Collaborative, and the Fatherhood Engagement Leadership Team. Ms. Jefferson has also served as a field instructor for the UCONN School of Social Work and has been an active member of the DCF Statewide Racial Justice committee since its inception in 2013 and was appointed tri-chair in 2019. Lara Stauning, Esq. (Attorney @Connecticut Department of Aging and Disability Services) Lara Stauning, Esq. is an attorney with the Connecticut Department of Aging and Disability Services (ADS). Ms. Stauning earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut and her JD from Western New England College School of Law. She provides general legal counsel to the Department’s State Unit on Aging and serves as the State’s Legal Assistance Developer, a position charged with acting as the State’s leader in promoting the rights of older adults through education and building the State’s capacity to provide legal services to older adults. Ms. Stauning also co-chairs the Coalition for Elder Justice in Connecticut, a partnership of public agencies and private organizations dedicated to promoting elder justice and preventing elder abuse. Prior to working at ADS she was a staff attorney with the Connecticut Department of Social Services, Office of Legal Counsel.
