Authors in Conversation: Apocalyptic Fiction
Ilze Hugo, author of The Down Days
Chuck Wendig, author of The Wanderers
Moderated by Lauren Jackson

Authors Ilze Hugo and Chuck Wendig join each other in conversation on their latest books, both of which imagine bizarre epidemics and a society whose slip into paranoia and fear may be more dangerous than the epidemics themselves. South African writer Hugo’s surreal debut, The Down Days, glides with ease from realism to absurdity as it charts the aftermath of a deadly outbreak, reminiscent of the 1962 event of mass hysteria that was the Tanganyika Laughter Epidemic. In a quarantined city in which the inexplicable has already occurred, rumors, superstitions, and conspiracy theories abound. Wendig presents the paperback edition of his novel, Wanderers, which finds citizens across America in the grips of a strange maladay, compelled to sleepwalk to a mysterious destination. But the real danger may not be the epidemic but the fear of it. With society collapsing all around them—and an ultraviolent militia threatening to exterminate them—the fate of the sleepwalkers depends on unraveling the mystery behind the epidemic. Lauren Jackson of Saga Press moderates the conversation between Hugo and Wendig, with an audience Q&A to follow!
