First Look: The National World War I Memorial
On Friday, April 16, the newest Washington, D.C. memorial was dedicated in Pershing Park. The National World War I Memorial honors the nearly five million Americans who fought abroad and the more than 116,000 who never made it home. It joins three existing memorials to the Great War erected between 1924 and 1936. Hear why and how each was created, with special focus paid to the new National World War Memorial. (Images and video clips will be used to bring it to life across the Zoom screen.) Not surprising for a D.C. memorial, its evolution from vision to reality was not without controversy and setbacks. And like all D.C. memorials, it’s the public’s presence that ultimately completes the project.
