Five Good Ideas with Rosemarie Powell
Five Good Ideas for building community-labour relations
More and more, communities demand that the workforce building public infrastructure better reflect the demographics of the local community and that the benefits of economic development be shared more equitably. At the same time, construction unions recognize community benefits as an opportunity to build on their work for increased diversity and inclusion in their workforce. There is an alignment of values and goals, but how do we ensure the promise of community benefits is fulfilled? In this Five Good Ideas session, Rosemarie Powell, Executive Director of the Toronto Community Benefits Network, will focus on the lessons learned as this community-labour coalition rolled up its sleeves to implement the community benefits agreements negotiated into some major public infrastructure projects, including the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, Finch West LRT, Casino Woodbine and the West Park Healthcare Centre. She will discuss how they formed a coalition of champions and allies and co-created the foundation for success. She will take you through their journey of building trust as well as discuss some of the systems and processes they used to hold each other accountable all while recognizing and celebrating progress.
