Home Gemmology - Cultured Pearls, a brief overview
In the 19th Home Gemmology webinar supported by CIBJO - The World Jewellery Confederation and co-hosted by Edward Johnson, we’ll cover pearls, this time a brief overview on the wonderful and vast world of cultured pearls. From the early attempts to the notable accomplishments of Mikimoto in Japan in the late 19th century and early 20th century and the subsequent trials in other molluscs from both saltwater and freshwater in other parts of the world, we’ll cover a bit of their their history. Culture pearl nomenclature, including “keshi”, and its relationship with the molluscs that grow them in pearl farms will also be entertained, from the Akoya, South Sea, Tahitian, Fijian and Sea of Cortez varieties in saltwater to the several freshwater varieties.
