Whose Story? Heritage and History in St. Eustatius
St. Eustatius (Statia) is an 8 square mile island in the Caribbean and a “special municipality” of the Netherlands. It is known today as the first foreign colony to salute the United States as a sovereign nation, and is often advertised by tourism companies as, “the historic gem of the Caribbean.” When we celebrate Dutch-American Heritage Day however, whose stories, histories, and heritage are we actually commemorating? Join archaeologist Fran Mahon as he discusses the implications and construction of heritage within the Caribbean, urging us to question how power is preserved, and through it, which histories are remembered.
