Inside the Vault: Food Purity, Prohibition, and the 1884 Election
Join us on March 2, 2023, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. ET (4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. PT) when our curators discuss a remarkable 1884 document: a pamphlet accusing presidential candidate Grover Cleveland of favoring “adulterated” food. Such accusations were the bread and butter of vicious and highly-competitive presidential elections during the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, a time when there was no secret ballot, elections were held in saloons, and party-run newspapers spread scandal freely. Come learn more about the issues, party politics, and political style that got out the vote. We will be joined by Lisa Andersen, Director of Academic Strategy at the Gilder Lehrman Institute.

This event is for teachers, students and their families — and everyone with an interest in history!

Everyone who registers will be sent a Zoom meeting link and instructions in the confirmation email.

PD certificates will be sent to all who attend the entirety of the program.

Please add the Gilder Lehrman Institute to your email safe sender list.
