PhD Thesis Defense by Raphaëlle Houdeville "Synchrotron powder diffraction on operando batteries at non-ambient temperature"
Synchrotron powder diffraction on operando batteries at non-ambient temperature

By Raphaëlle Houdeville from the BL04-MSPD Group at ALBA Synchrotron and the Solid State Chemistry (SSC) Group at ICMAB-CSIC

Abstract: In situ X-ray techniques in operando batteries were early identified as a precious tool to get a mechanistic understanding of ion insertion in the electrodes’ structures. Indeed, they enable fast data collection while reducing the risk of altering the sample’s structure. Although various geometries of in situ cells are available commercially, none of them allow data collection at non-ambient temperature conditions. The goal of this thesis is to develop and test such cells. Three electrochemical systems were studied to assess the new cells. Li//TiS2 cells were tested to get better comprehension of the solvent cointercalation phenomenon. These informations were precious to study calcium insertion in TiS2 at non-ambient temperatures. Finally, NVP was tested in its α-phase (2°C) and β-phase (40°C).
