"Human beings have always been intrigued by the universe as a phenomenon. How do we relate to this Universe? Are we conscious? Why are we conscious? What is it that makes us conscious? Are the plants conscious? While modern science has been grappling with these concepts. Reductionist science has groped through our brains trying to find which part of the brain is responsible. Cutting most of our brains as much as possible have no effects on human consciousness. Is consciousness beyond us? May be everything not only living but non-living have their own consciousness.
Sages from ancient India not only understood consciousness and the functioning of the universe but there is evidence of guru to disciple transfer of this knowledge. Swami Vivekananda in his celebrate writing of “Raja Yoga” says that initially there was ‘Akasha’ and then it got infiltrated with ‘Prana’ that led to this creation. So, is the Universe inherently conscious? If the material body is the basis of consciousness where is the role of so-called other bodies called “koshas”?
In this talk Dr. Indranill Basu Ray brings the approach to consciousness study through scientific approach and the yogic approach and tries to find a path that might lead to the understanding of this elusive phenomenon that is both scientific but not reductionist
