Novel bacterial cellulose materials: structuration, functional nanocomposites and photocurable Hydrogels

Abstract: The over 300 million tons worldwide yearly production of plastics and its environmental impact demand efforts to improve and establish new waste management routes, reuse products and create alternative biodegradable products. In this framework, bacterial cellulose outstands as an alternative bio-resource which encompass the properties of the cellulose with the  characteristics of the nanomaterials as well as a versatility to be physically and chemically tuned, opening a wide range of opportunities for this material and its composites. Therefore, this thesis aims to demonstrate the adaptability of bacterial cellulose by providing new surface topographies and functionalities through in-situ and ex-situ strategies, paving the way towards new advanced biodegradable and bioresource-based materials.
