Fulfilling Older Adult's Best Wishes : The Roles and Obligations of a Power of Attorney

The process, roles and obligations of Powers of Attorney are often misunderstood, which can lead to a complexity of issues for those appointed as decision makers by an older adult. This webinar will provide answers to those important questions about the process, the legal obligations of those appointed and their roles as PoAs for an older adult’s personal care and/or property.
An overview about legal guardianship will also be provided, including when it may be necessary to appoint a guardian, and what duties may need to be fulfilled in the older adult’s stead.

The presenter, Helen Button, will highlight practical tips and approaches towards ensuring the best interest of the older adult are fulfilled.

She holds a B.A. in English and History from Western University and an M.A. in English from the University of Toronto. She earned her J.D (Juris Doctor) from Western Law in 2013. After her call to the bar in 2014, Helen practiced at a law firm in Simcoe, Ontario before joining Gunn & Associates as an associate in January, 2020. She assists clients in a range of practice areas including estate planning and administration, Powers of Attorney, and guardianships, and has a particular interest in serving seniors and their families. Helen is an active volunteer and has held positions on a number of not-for-profit boards, including the Norfolk Association for Community Living, Elder Abuse Elgin, and YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin.
