In this bonus lecture, Andrew Bolton will explore the legacy of U.S. President Truman and the Peace Mission of Community of Christ. President Truman was president for two months when, in the presence of delegates from 50 nations, he signed the United Nations Charter on June 26th 1945 in San Francisco. His first public speech about this momentous event was the next day in the RLDS auditorium in Independence. The place was packed. The war in Europe was over, the war against Japan still to be won. On the 8th of August President Truman signed the ratification of the UN Charter by the USA, the first country in the world to do so. On the same day the second atom bomb fell on Nagasaki, Japan and ended WWII. How do we evaluate these momentous events by President Truman today in light of Community of Christ’s Temple of Peace with a Japanese meditation garden at its heart? Andrew’s lecture will conclude with the Daily Prayer for Peace.
