Racial Capitalism in the Legal Profession

Racial capitalism – the process of deriving social and economic value from the racial identity of another person – is a longstanding, common, and deeply problematic practice. Legal employers are not immune to the use of racial capitalism as a means to recruit lawyers, obtain clients, and cultivate goodwill within the profession and the broader community. The use of racial capitalism grew exponentially in the wake of George Floyd’s murder and the subsequent racial reckoning of the summer of 2020.
