On Friday, Mar 26, we will be speaking with Phiona Okumu, Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa at Spotify and M.I Abaga, Nigerian hip-hop artiste and producer.
Phiona has her finger on the pulse when it comes to youth culture and music trends. As the artist and label marketing manager for Africa and a former editor in music media who has created content for some of the most influential entities (AfriPOP, The Fader, Apple), the Ugandan music industry professional has developed a knack for sniffing out the next big trend while amplifying the global profile of several African artists.
Widely heralded as one of Africa's most commercially successfully rappers, M.I. Abaga, M.I. is widely known for his commitment to innovation in producing and marketing his music, as well as showcasing young talent.
His ‘MI2' album remains Nigeria's best-selling hip-hop album. Rendezvous, his 2018 release featured a mishmash of burgeoning young talent, and members of the country's 'alte' community. He also holds the record (5) for the most albums charting at one time on Apple Music in Nigeria.
M.I and Phiona will be sharing their perspective on how to accelerate the growth of Africa's music industry; M.I from an artist's perspective, and Phiona from that of a corporate stakeholder.
Attendees will also be able to ask them burning questions in an interactive session. The event is open to experienced and aspiring entrepreneurs as well as everyone else who is playing in the African technology industry.
