Unlocked is working to build a fairer prison system. A diverse and inclusive workforce is essential to doing this.
The disproportionate representation of certain groups in the criminal justice system is a major issue – and a priority for Unlocked. Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people are over-represented in the prison population (making up more than 25% of the adult male prison population and over 50% of young people) compared to the general population. In comparison, only 10% of prison officers self-identify as being from these backgrounds.
Join Unlocked, as we discuss the issues and solutions surrounding race and racism in prisons and the wider criminal justice system.
We’ll be joined by keynote speaker Babafemi Dada, Governor of HMP Gartree, who will be talking about race and racism in prisons as well as his journey to becoming the first Black prison governor in the UK. Our panel will include Unlocked participants – system changers and policy makers working on the frontline. You will also hear from people with lived experience of prison and other professionals making an impact in the sector.
