This series is being presented free and is for AGLCA members only. It will help newer boaters focus on safety while bringing a refresher to those who have been long-term boaters. This course does not result in the certificate required in some states, but it is great preparation to take your state course. It also allows us to take a deep dive into some of the more important topics that aren't covered at length during a safe boating certificate course. The agenda is:

-Labeling system (new system vs. old system) -Kids and PFDs

-How many PFDs should you have on board? -Maintenance of inflatables
1/30-Intro to Marine radios
-Why Marine VHF?
-Fixed mount vs. handheld
-Dedicated channels (CH16, CH13, CH22A)
-The limited number of channels for recreational users
-Hailing a commercial vessel
-Calling for help (MAYDAY)
-Other calls (PAN PAN and SECURITE).
-DCS and MMSI
2/13-Required safety equipment.
-Safety equipment required by law for U.S. vessels
-Vessel size impacts required equipment
-How to get a free no-fault vessel safety inspections
-Why you want a free safety inspection
-What the Coast Guard will be looking for if you are boarded.
2/27-Rules of the road
-COLREGS-the collision regulations.
-Understanding stand on/give way - Who goes first?
-Boating around commercial vessels & tows - avoiding danger
3/13-ATONs - Aids to Navigation
-The highway or street signs on the water
-Buoys and daymarks
-Warning and regulatory markers
-How to read ICW marks
3/20-Nav Lights, Dayshapes and sound signals
- Reading vessel lights at night
- Dayshapes on commercial vessels during the day.
- Sound signals-signalling for meeting or passing
3/27-US Coast Guard and Its Role on the Water
-How to be boarded by the US Coast Guard
-What to expect
