Women, Life, Freedom: The Case of Mahsa Amini and Morality Police in Iran
Description followed by a short bio of the guest. [250 words]

On September 16th, Zhina (Mahsa) Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, died under contentious circumstances in a detention center in Iran after her arrest by the morality police, who accused her of violating the laws on compulsory veiling. In the wake of her death, thousands of Iranians have taken to the streets to protest against the theocratic and authoritarian nature of the current Iranian political system. Join MPAC as we discuss the many complexities surrounding this topic including, but not limited to, how the hijab has become a tool of oppression by both the Iranian and the so-called western-liberal democracies (i.e., Iran is jailing women for not wearing the hijab while many European countries are banning women from wearing the hijab), the erosion of Islamic ethics under authoritarian regimes, the historical bias exhibited by media on reporting coming out of Iran, and the impact of the overall historical and current US policy on the most vulnerable groups in Iran.
