Respiratory Muscle Strength Clinical Training Workshop (with Australia) presented by Christine Sapienza, Ph.D, CCC - SLP
This webinar is scheduled to accommodate SLP's in the USA and Australia. This presentation will cover the basic principles and clinical utility of Respiratory Muscle Strength Training (RMST). It will include information on its theoretical underpinnings, report on outcome data, and present treatment approaches for patient groups using both inspiratory and expiratory training devices.
Learning Outcomes -
Participants will : Identify key anatomical and physiologic components of respiration, swallow and cough. 1).Determine effectiveness of RMST for patient care. 2) Demonstrate the ability to assess key measures of respiratory strength and relate these to RMST protocols. 3) Demonstrate knowledge of devices for RMST and advantages/disadvantages with various patient groups. 4)Demonstrate ability to plan and implement RMST protocols for patients. 5) Demonstrate ability to assess RMST outcomes in terms of respiratory muscle strength, swallow and cough.
5:00 pm Sign On – Test and correct Audio and Video. (5:00PM EDT on Sunday 9/25)
5:15 pm What is RMST : Review of Literature and peripheral mechanisms associated with inspiratory and expiratory strength training protocols. (1)
6:15 Airway Protection: Review of anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system, passive and active mechanisms of breathing and the physiology of cough and swallow. (1)
7:30 Applications for Assessment & Treatment, Demonstration (Use, Troubleshooting, Measurement) Device types will be reviewed, assessment and treatment protocols for both inspiratory and expiratory pressure threshold training. Demonstration of devices. (2)
