What is it about Mary, Mother of Jesus, that inspires so many belief traditions to revere her? Discover why people of many faiths find strength, encouragement and hope in her.
Rini Ghosh, PhD - Hindu/Vedanta
In India, Christians form just 2.3 percent of the nearly 1.4 billion residents. But Mary, the Mother of Jesus, is also adored by millions of Hindus. Dr. Ghosh will discuss how Mary Mata (Mary Mother), compassionate and loving, fits right into the Hindu tradition of Mother worship and feminine power veneration. Like other mother goddesses, she is a guide for devotees on their spiritual journeys toward the Divine Power.
Ray Mattes, IHM, DMin, LPCC - Christian/Catholic
Dr. Mattes will present a Catholic/Christian perspective on the mother of Jesus. According to him, the earliest known Christian hymn honoring Mary dates to 250 C.E. and invokes her compassion as a refuge in times of trouble. Dr. Mattes will explore this compassion in the understanding of Mary as a model of faith and a trusted friend in daily life.
Sophia Pandya, PhD - Muslim
Dr. Pandya notes that Mary (in Arabic, Maryam) is one of Islam’s most revered women. Honored by Allah above all others for her piety, Mary is the only woman mentioned by name in the Qur’an. She is believed by some Muslims to be a prophet and is a role model for women. Dr. Pandya will shed light on lesser-known stories about Mary in the Qur’an and Islamic tradition.
