Martin van Leeuwen

Martin van Leeuwen is an experienced metal professional with 20 years of experience in zinc, aluminum and steel. After he got his master degree in Chemical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology in 1997, he has been working in various roles in R&D, engineering & contracting, operations and sales & marketing. He worked for several mining & metal companies in iron & steel, aluminium and zinc such as TataSteel Europe, Alcoa and Nyrstar. In 2017 he started with the International Zinc Association (IZA) in Brussels. He works on market development of zinc applications in renewable energies and thermal spraying for corrosion protection, and is involved in the regional IZA programs in China, India, Africa and Latin America.
Sabina Grund

Sabina Grund joined the International Zinc Association (IZA) in 2018 as Manager, Sustainable Development. In this capacity coordinates IZA’s Sustainable Development programs, including responsible sourcing, circular aconomy, life cycle assessment, and the global zinc industries’ comtributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Dr. Grund is chair of the GDMB zinc experts group and vice chair of Metals for Buildings. Dr. Grund graduated from the department of non-ferrous metals (IME) of the Technical University of Aachen (RWTH), Germany in 1996. After her graduation she worked for the copper recycling industry in Germany. In 1999 Dr. Grund joined Initiative Zink, the newly founded German zinc association. Initiative Zinc focuses on technical marketing and communication of zinc uses, environment and sustainability. During her 18 year tenure Initiative Zink became the voice of the German zinc industry representing 25 companies that produce, use and recycle zinc in Germany.

After primary school in Germany, high school with focus on mathematics in Belgium I went to KU-Leuven University which I finished with a Master’s in Chemical Engineering in 1981. In 1982 I started my professional career at Exxon Antwerp. From 1984-2008 I worked with Metallurgie Hoboken Overpelt. Since 2009 I have been employed at Zinacor SA, Belgium but working for parent company Grillo-Werke AG. In 2016 I did my PhD. in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at UNI Brescia, Italy. In 1984 I started as a technical commercial assistant for the zinc industry, specializing in zinc alloys for hot dip galvanizing and die casting; the latter became my specialty. I developed a few alloys together with the R&D Team of Umicore and Grillo-Werke AG as well as some technological novelties in the diecasting including foil casting; super fluid alloy GDSL; HDMI hot manifold direct injection and the zinc light technology. Latest development is the ZEP®alloys, the perfect alternatives for leaded brass.
Ryan Winter
Vice President Engineering Services @Eastern Alloys Inc.
Ryan is the Vice President of Engineering Services at Eastern Alloys. He has been with Eastern since 1999. He received a bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering and an MBA from the University of Utah. His role in the company is to provide technical and marketing services to Eastern’s customer base as well as the general die casting industry. Technical services that are performed include defect analysis, plant audits, and training seminars. As part of his various roles, Ryan actively seeks out zinc die casting opportunities, and offers various types of seminars to help educate the industry on the advantages of Zinc die casting alloys. Ryan is the main developer and marketer of one of Eastern’s new zinc based alloys called EZAC, which is a high strength, creep resistant alloy used in the die casting industry.

Martin Schlotterbeck

Martin Schlotterbeck is Head of Training Department at Oskar Frech Germany and has over 30 years of experience in Toolmaking and Process engineering within the Frech group. He did an apprenticeship as toolmaker, acquired a Master's certificate in mechanics and works as licensed instructor. His experience had involved the die casting of most alloys: Zn, Mg, Al across many parts of the world and have covered the casting of thinnest mobile phone castings to big massive aluminium parts. Martin also acts as a consulting process engineer to several well-known companies, advising them on part design and assisting them to achieve optimal quality with Frech die casting equipment.
Johannes Lohn
Head of Development and Engineering @PROTIQ GmbH
Johannes Lohn studied mechanical engineering at the University of Paderborn. Following his studies, he worked as a research assistant at the DMRC.As part of his research work on the topic of additive manufacturing, Mr Lohn built up an optimised machine for selective laser sintering and investigated the laser-powder interaction. Today, he represents PROTIQ GmbH as an authorised signatory and is responsible for the areas of development, marketing and sales.
Lothar Kallien

Since 2004 Prof. Lothar H. Kallien has been heading the foundry laboratory at Aalen University of Applied Sciences In 1984, he received a Master’s Degree (Dipl.-Ing.) in Foundry Engineering and Metallurgy at the Technical University in Aachen, Germany. In 1988 he received a Ph.D. on „Highly undercooled and rapidly solidified metal powders“, awarded with the Borchers Medal. He headed the High Pressure Die Casting group at MAGMA GmbH in Aachen. He was also president of MAGMA Foundry Technology in Chicago, Illinois and president of SIGMA Engineering GmbH, specialized on 3D simulation tools for plastic injection moulding. 2009 he won the best paper award of the NADCA conference in USA on a new Gas Injection in High pressure die casting. He is a member of the scientific committee of several conferences related to casting technology. Prof. Kallien holds two yearly conferences on castings and high pressure die casting in Aalen.
