SIAC Webinar: Emissions Trading in Asia: Opportunities, Risks and Disputes
To meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement and address global warming, State and non-State actors need to dramatically reduce global greenhouse gas emissions. Emissions trading schemes (ETSs) – which impose caps on emissions, and allow trading of allowances and the generation of offsets – are an important tool to help achieve a transition to a low-carbon economy.

With recent developments in the international framework for emissions trading under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, as well as the proliferation of emissions trading in Asia, comes the creation of new legal relationships between and amongst States and non-State actors.

Join us for this exciting webinar as our expert panel of speakers discuss the following:
• An overview of ETSs with a focus on Asia, including cap-and-trade regimes and carbon offsetting, international arrangements (such as the Paris Agreement and Glasgow Climate Pact), and currently established regional and domestic offsetting schemes;
• Legal relationships between and among entities involved in emissions trading, including States and private entities;
• Risks and opportunities in the current and future landscape of emissions trading, including from changing international, regional and domestic policies, tightening of emissions caps, and evolving market price dynamics;
• How these risks are allocated and addressed in a variety of legal instruments (such as State regulations, contracts, and agreements that link schemes across international borders); and
• The current and future landscape of disputes, and the role of arbitration in mitigating the risks associated with emissions trading and carbon offsetting, and the promotion of more efficient and effective trading regimes.
