Rethinking Gender-Based Violence in 2020: Perspectives from Egypt, Lebanon and Syria

The Euro-Mediterranean Women’s Foundation (EMWF) has been monitoring the initiatives of the members of its network related to the fight against the different types of gender-based violence that have increased and transformed during the COVID-19 pandemic. As noted by relevant gender experts, the patriarchal legacy that informs these types of violence came into full play during the pandemic in the MENA region.

On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (November 25), the IEMed, in collaboration with the EMWF,, has organised a webinar to discuss how gender-based violence unfolds in some MENA countries in times of COVID, and to highlight the different actions implemented to eradicate it or minimise its toll.

Three gender equality experts and representatives of civil society will help us better understand the mapping of gender-based violence in their countries, drawing, at the same time, an alternative map that speaks of resilience. They will pay attention to the subtleties of the increase in gender-based violence that has accompanied the pandemic – mainly, but not only, related to lock-down measures – and will discuss the multi-layered responses that have appeared to contest such rise and that produced useful knowledge to inform relevant policies.
