How do you develop a strategy when the target keeps moving? The COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) was accompanied by several waivers and flexibilities that removed many of the barriers to telehealth. The PHE has been extended in 90-day increments since the PHE began in 2020. It is currently set to expire in April 2023. It may or may not be extended another 90-days. In the meantime:
• Some of the temporary flexibilities and waiver have been made permanent by CMS through changes to the published Physician’s Fee Schedules in 2021, 2022 and now 2023.
• Some of the temporary flexibilities and waivers will expire on the day the PHE is declared over.
• Some of the flexibilities and waivers have been extended for 151 days after the end of the PHE.
• Some of the flexibilities and waivers have been extended through December 31, 2024.
For those of you who jumped on the telehealth bandwagon after the PHE, you may or may not realize that the policy landscape for telehealth was very different prior to the PHE. If this describes you, you may be in for a very rude awakening. Join Rebecca Canino as she discusses the many tools she has put in place to help her organization stay on top of all these confusing and sometimes chaotic changes.
