Loud, Naked, & in Three Colors: Boston's Tattooed Folk & Folk Art
Join us for a virtual book signing and conversation live on Zoom with Derin Bray and Margaret Hodges, authors of Loud, Naked, & in Three Colors: The Liberty Boys & The History of Tattooing in Boston (www.rakehouse.com). The discussion hosted by Skinner’s Steve Fletcher will touch on the rich tradition of tattooing and tattoo folk art as featured in their book.

From the 1910s until 1962, when Massachusetts banned tattooing statewide, Edward “Dad” Liberty and his three sons held a near-monopoly on the Boston tattoo scene from their shops in Scollay Square, the city’s gritty entertainment district. Over the course of their careers, the Liberty men made and acquired a trove of hand-painted tattoo “flash” art, photographs, shop signs, and ephemera, much of which became dispersed over time. Derin Bray and Margaret Hodges have brought together this material, for the first time in nearly a century, to produce a groundbreaking visual and narrative history of tattooing. Loud, Naked & in Three Colors is available at www.rakehouse.com. Follow their work on Instagram @rakehouse and @derinbray.
