Ask TVOA: Cllr Kieron Williams, Leader, Southwark Council

Councillor Kieron Williams had big shoes to fill, taking over as leader in September 2020 after a decade with Peter John at the helm. In that time, Southwark has become a byword for growth in London, a borough transformed and delivering more new homes than any other in England.

In May, councillor Williams led Labour to a convincing win, gaining three seats to hold 52 out of 63, against a determined Liberal Democrat assault. He has a clear mandate to deliver a "fairer, greener, safer" Southwark. The pledge is to start building 1,000 more homes local people can afford by 2026, including homes for older people, plus 500 new homes for key workers and a requirement for new social rent homes in private developments. The council will deliver 2,000 green jobs, 2,000 apprenticeships and a new Thriving High Streets Fund.
