Karine Hirn is co-Founder and Chief Sustainability Officer of East Capital Group. Established in Sweden in 1997, East Capital has expanded its reach from being a pioneer investor in Eastern Europe to offering global emerging and frontier market strategies. The firm also offers innovative products in the field of sustainable investing, such as East Capital Global Emerging Markets Sustainable.
Karine started her career in Russia in the 1990's and became the Head of a Russian Bank in Moscow before relocating to Sweden, where she lived for 15 years and was the CEO of East Capital. She moved to Shanghai in 2010 and is currently based in Hong Kong. Under her helm, East Capital was the first fund manager in Northern Europe to get a license to invest into China’s domestic A-shares market in 2013. Karine is a frequent media commentator on emerging markets and investments.
The ESG Initiative is building a best practices framework of ESG investing in emerging markets. We engage investors who have innovative ways of integrating ESG factors into their investment frameworks, and who advocate for best practices with EM sovereigns and corporates.
